Seminars & Workshops Description

Working Effectively with Risk – full day workshop

(ONLINE OPTION AVAILABLE BELOW IF SOLD OUT)

Research over the past three decades has greatly advanced our understanding of risk in mental health, particularly with respect to concerns about suicide, self-harm and violence. We will summarise the evidence base and provide practical guidance as to how to use this knowledge in everyday practice to support meaningful, shared safety planning. However, this is only part of the task. All risk-related work is inherently value-laden. We will additionally provide mental health workers with ways to enhance their awareness of competing and diverse values and outline methods for collaborative practice.

Stay S.A.F.E.R. Method for Working with Angry Clients – 3 hours

Whether anger is a result of psychosis, intoxication, frustration, invalidation, neglect or other drivers, there are easy to apply strategies informed by robust learnings, that are effective when working with angry clients. In this workshop, we will explore research findings related to anger, the escalation cycle and introduce the highly effective, Stay S.A.F.E.R. method.

BPD & Complex Trauma – Carers Forum – 3 hours

Supporting our friends and family members who experience BPD and Complex Trauma can be very challenging. Added to this, accessing timely support and care, can often result in disappointment and despair. When self harm, suicidality, emotional distress and challenging behaviours are present, it can be a very isolating, anxiety provoking and frustrating experience for all. This 3 hour forum will provide key information in understanding the emotional, behavioural and relational challenges that occur with BPD and Complex Trauma and provide time for carers to discuss challenges they face and explore helpful strategies.

Facilitator for all sessions

Brett Bridges is a practising mental health clinician, mental health consultant, trainer and therapist. He has over 30 years of experience working with families including in support and therapy contexts. His extensive experience includes the specialist fields of personality disorder, acute mental health, trauma, complex care, forensic mental health, alcohol and other drugs, intellectual disability and corrections.

2 x 2 hour pre-recorded sessions commencing Nov 16th (complete at a time that suits you!)

and

 1 x LIVE SESSION 19th November 11am to 2.30pm PERTH TIME

Description

BPD and Complex trauma impact the personal lives and professional relationships of a significant number of people in the community. The impacts of trauma and negative attachment experiences can leave a person struggling to know how to engage effectively in treatment and support, whom to trust, what is actually considered ‘safe’, and may increase fears of further trauma and relationship rejection or abandonment. Together, these experiences can contribute to feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, increased anxiety, decreased coping and an exacerbation in self-harm and suicide thinking.

Our Curious Minds (complex mental health training and consultancy) have partnered with Neami National (recovery-oriented community mental health organisation) to deliver a series of workshops  designed to help both clinical and non-clinical services gain a better understanding of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Complex Trauma.

Workshop Content

The workshop will help participants develop a clearer understanding of BPD and Complex Trauma, their differences and similarities, and provide effective strategies to support consumer-centred outcomes in challenging situations.

Topics covered include:

  • Promoting meaningful interactions within clear boundaries that support emotional growth and recovery.
  • The function of deliberate self-harm and effective responses to enhance safety.
  • Reducing relevant risk factors and promoting protective factors in suicide and self-harm.
  • Responding effectively and efficiently in crisis situations.
  • Trauma-Informed Care and Practice – its role in supporting recovery-orientated outcomes.

    1. Part 1 is a  2 hour pre-recorded online webinar focusing on presenting features and influencing factors for BPD and Complex Trauma, including their overlaps, their differences and their unique requirements for supporting recovery-orientated and trauma informed outcomes.
    2. Part 2 is a 2 hour pre-recorded online webinar focusing on the role of attachment, working through relationship challenges and addressing considerations and interventions for suicide and crisis situations.
    3. Part 3 is a 3.5 hour LIVE webinar delivered on NOVEMBER 19th at 11am PERTH TIME broken into two sessions with a short break in between.
      • Utilising a detailed case example, we will further explore the impacts of trauma and its impact on the client – worker relationship. Interactive group work will provide practical opportunities to work through these relational challenges applying the learnings from the pre-recorded sessions.
      • The second session addresses the practical impacts of deliberate self harm and utilises group work to apply helpful interventions underpinned by a trauma informed approach. We will have time to discuss crisis situations and helpful strategies to support recovery focused outcomes.
