Both of these workshops are focus on applied practice in the context of challenges faced in a remote community and are applicable to clinical and support workers, counsellors and managers.


TRAUMA AWARENESS, TRAUMA RESPONSE

full day workshop (catered)

Contemporary work in health, well-being and support settings requires workers to be informed about and responsive to trauma. This workshop will support workers to effectively navigate challenges faced when supporting clients who have been impacted by trauma. Additionally, the workshop provides key considerations to trauma awareness and practice in everyday work settings, enabling a more trusting and safer experience for workers and clients, supporting safety and well-being considerations.

Individual and collective trauma contexts will be explored with opportunity to discuss localised challenges and concerns.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Understanding trauma and its impacts on the brain, mind, and body
  • Understanding PTSD and CPTSD
  • Exploring the differences and similarities of individual and collective trauma
  • The role of Trauma Informed Care & Practice in supportive effective systems work
  • How to improve effective engagement in stressful / challenging settings
  • CHIME – as ‘guide rails’ for true recovery orientated work within a trauma context
  • Key reflections relating to TICP
  • Group discussion addressing challenges faced by participants with client’s experiencing or that have experienced trauma.

COUNSELLING CONSIDERATIONS : what helps, what hinders

half day workshop (catered)

Following on from trauma awareness training, this workshop will enable participants to explore challenging aspects of counselling work including clinical and supportive counselling contexts. We will discuss key principles and practices that enable a better counselling experience for the client and their worker.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Promote a trusting, safe and productive counselling experience for the client
  • Understand transference and countertransference in the counselling relationship
  • Respond to risk concerns within the counselling relationship
  • Navigate systemic challenges that impact the counselling work

Brett Bridges is a highly experienced mental health clinician, mental health consultant, trainer and therapist. He has over 30 years of experience working in complex, challenging and high risk environments. His extensive experience includes the specialist fields of personality disorder, acute mental health, trauma, complex care, forensic mental health, alcohol and other drugs, intellectual disability and corrections. This training has been developed in collaboration with Associate Professor Andrew Carroll, Forensic Psychiatrist.
